Mabel May Woodward
1877-1945
Watercolor

Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1877, Woodward first studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she later joined the faculty staff and taught for many years. She studied with Chase, Dumond and Kenyon Cox, at the Art Students League in New York, and with Woodbury at the Ogunquit School. She spent most of her summers in Ogunquet Maine and was a member of the Ogunquet Art Association.
She was a member and first woman president of the Providence Art Club, and frequently exhibited there, including a one-woman show in 1939. She often sited Wm.M.Chase and Frank Dumond, of the Old Lyme School, who she worked with, as major influences on her art.
Most sought after are her beach scenes which are very impressionistic and executed in “plein air” style, although many of her other subjects are very desirable and noteworthy. She primarily painted in oil, however perhaps 10% to 15% of her work is in watercolor.
She was also a member of the Providence Watercolor Club and the South County Art Association. Her work is today highly collected and prized.
